Candida krusei is a rare but clinically significant yeast species that can cause opportunistic infections, particularly in immunocompromised individuals, such as cancer patients or those undergoing bone marrow transplants. It is inherently resistant to fluconazole, a commonly used antifungal, which makes treatment more challenging and often necessitates the use of alternative agents like echinocandins or voriconazole. C. krusei infections may present in various forms, including bloodstream infections (candidemia) and mucocutaneous infections, though vaginal infections are less common. Its resistance profile and association with high morbidity in vulnerable populations underscore the importance of early identification through culture and susceptibility testing, as well as careful antifungal selection.
