Overview.
Ebola virus (EBOV) causes the severe and potentially lethal disease Ebola virus disease (EVD), which has a high case-fatality rate and is usually characterised by fever, gastrointestinal signs and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Human-to-human transmission of EBOV occurs via direct contact with an infected person or those who die from EVD, with the virus entering the body through broken skin or mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, or mouth.

Both dry swabs and swabs placed in viral transport media (VTM) can be used and any other sample types used must be validated in-house prior to use at the risk of false negatives.
