Overview.
Enteroviruses are single-stranded RNA viruses that are responsible for several human diseases. Their name is derived from the fact that they are transmitted via intestinal routes. Often found in respiratory samples and stool samples, enterovirus infection can cause significant illness in humans, including hand, food and mouth disease. Symptoms of enterovirus infection range from mild common cold symptoms, to more severe paralysis and aseptic meningitis.
