Overview:

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a bacterium that can cause fatal pneumonia. Most people who become infected exhibit symptoms but there are some cases of it being asymptomatic.

Due to the fact the bacterium has no cell wall, making it neither gram positive or gram negative, the ambiguous symptoms presented by the bacterium and the fact that there are several other microorganisms that can cause pneumonia, precise identification is key. Because of this lack of cell wall, common treatment methods, (e.g b-lactams like Ampicillin) may be ineffective.

Most people that are infected show symptoms, however, the bacterium is capable of asymptomatic infections. Additionally, many different microorganisms can cause pneumonia ranging from other bacteria (e.g. Staphylococcus pneumoniae), viruses (Influenza A), and even fungi.

The assay is an in vitro PCR reaction assay for the quantitative determination of M. pneumoniae in a human samples such as sputum and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). The assay is based on the hydrolysis probe detection method for Human M. pneumoniae with a highly sensitive one step qPCR kit.

This in vitro diagnostic kit provides qualitative detection.

The Zena Max M.pneumoniae PCR kit is sensitive to 221 copies/test “rxn volume 25ul” per reaction under our validation methods and devices. The specificity of the AMD M. pneumoniae assay is up to 100% for Human M. pneumoniae DNA.
