Clostridium difficile, often referred to as C. difficile or C. diff, is a bacterium that can cause infections, primarily affecting the colon and causing a range of symptoms from mild diarrhoea to severe inflammation of the colon known as colitis. C. difficile infections typically occur in individuals who have recently taken antibiotics, as the antibiotics can disrupt the normal balance of gut bacteria, allowing C. difficile to multiply. The bacterium produces toxins that contribute to the development of symptoms.
