Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli, and Campylobacter lari are closely related bacteria belonging to the Campylobacter genus. They are among the leading causes of bacterial gastroenteritis in humans. These bacteria are commonly found in the intestines of animals, especially poultry, and can contaminate food products such as undercooked poultry, raw milk, and untreated water.
Campylobacter infections, known as campylobacteriosis, lead to symptoms like diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever, and vomiting. Most infections are self-limiting and resolve without medical treatment, but severe cases may require antibiotics. These bacteria are also associated with a rare but serious complication called Guillain-Barré syndrome, an autoimmune disorder affecting the nervous system.
