Chlamydophila pneumoniae is a Gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacterium that causes respiratory tract infections in humans, ranging from mild upper respiratory illness to pneumonia. It has a biphasic developmental cycle, alternating between the infectious elementary body (EB) and the replicative reticulate body (RB), which allows survival and multiplication within host cells.

Transmission occurs primarily through respiratory droplets, and infections are often community-acquired, affecting people of all ages but are more common in school-aged children and adults. Clinical presentations can be subtle, with a gradual onset of symptoms such as sore throat, hoarseness, and persistent cough, sometimes progressing to bronchitis or atypical pneumonia. C. pneumoniae has also been investigated for potential associations with chronic diseases, including asthma and atherosclerosis, though these links remain under study.
