Astrovirus PCR Detection Kit
Overview.
Astrovirus is a non-enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus that causes gastroenteritis, primarily in young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Named for its star-like appearance under the electron microscope, it is transmitted via the faecal–oral route, often through contaminated food, water, or surfaces. Infection typically leads to mild, self-limiting illness characterised by diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and occasionally fever, with symptoms usually lasting 2–4 days. While generally less severe than rotavirus or norovirus infections, astrovirus can still cause significant outbreaks in childcare centres, nursing homes, and other closed settings. No specific antiviral treatment or vaccine is available, and management focuses on supportive care, particularly oral rehydration to prevent dehydration.
