Mumps is caused by the mumps virus (muV), a highly neurotropic virus characterised by painful inflammatory symptoms, such as parotitis and orchitis1. Mumps is a supposedly benign disease, of which only two thirds of infections arise with recognised clinical symptoms such as low-grade fever, anorexia, malaise and headache2. Long term, however, this virus can cause such as seizures, cranial nerve palsies, hydrocephalus, and deafness3.

Specimens may include whole blood, K2EDTA plasma, serum, and lesion exudate samples from the skin. It is based on the hydrolysis probe detection method and is a highly sensitive one step qPCR kit.
