Listeria monocytogenes, often referred to as Listeria, is a bacterium that can cause a foodborne illness called listeriosis. It is commonly found in soil, water, and some animals. Listeria can contaminate a variety of foods, including unpasteurized dairy products, ready-to-eat deli meats, and certain vegetables. Pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly susceptible to severe infections. Listeriosis symptoms can range from mild flu-like symptoms to more severe complications like meningitis and septicaemia.
