However, in some cases, FECV can mutate into FIPV, leading to Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), a serious and often fatal disease. FIP affects various organ systems and can lead to a range of symptoms such as fever, fluid accumulation in the abdomen or chest, and neurological issues. FIPV is not highly contagious and typically arises from within a cat’s own body.
