This gram-negative bacterium is responsible for the plague. The bacterium is zoonotic as it may reside in mammals, or fleas and these tend to be the primary vectors. However, the bacteria can infect surfaces and become airborne in mucus droplets. The bacterium causes septicaemia, the bubonic plague and pneumonia in its hosts.

If diagnosed early, and with the correct course of antibiotics, patients can recover. However, this requires fast and accurate identification of the bacterium to tailor the treatment.
