Meningitis is a viral or bacterial infection of the meninges, the membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The infection can vary in severity and if not treated quickly, can lead to septicaemia, permanent damage to the nervous system or even death. Meningitis can affect anyone, but can be particularly common in babies, children or young adults, presenting symptoms of nausea ,vomiting, fever, headache, stiff neck and confusion.
Whilst viral meningitis is the most common, bacterial meningitis is the most serious cause of infection if treatment is not given quickly. Although there are many bacteria associated with meningitis, below shows the bacteria most common related to the disease:
- Neisseria meningitidis – most common cause for bacterial meningitis
- Haemophilus influenzae – second most common cause for bacterial meningitis
- Streptococcus pneumoniae
Due to the current length diagnostic methods to identify the bacterial meningitis and the rapid development of the disease, treatment is often given based on symptoms only. However, with the increased improvements in molecular biology technology, a diagnosis of bacterial meningitis can be identified in a matter of hours, compared to 36-48 hours. The AMD Bacterial Meningitis kit provides the user with the 3 genes most associated with this deadly disease.
The range of assays described below are in vitro PCR reaction assays for the quantitative determination of bacterial meningitis genes within bacterial cells. Gene expression can be measured using samples such as whole blood or CSF based on Taqman detection method for bacterial meningitis genes with a highly sensitive one step qPCR kit.
Quality: All AMD kits are manufactured under high-quality standardization methods with unique precision and sensitive technology when compared to the most of the famous and approved diagnostic commercial Bacterial Meningitis qPCR assays.
Specificity: AMD Bacterial Meningitis shows up to 100% specificity for sodC, lytA and hpd genes under our validation methods and devices.
